What springs to mind when we discuss the media and information?

Since we live in a modern age, media, and information have been ingrained into our daily existence. Media development keeps pace with technological advancement. Information is being disseminated quickly, and communications have also begun to improve. Consider the scenario when people used to send letters and deliver them by snail mail as their primary method of communication. Nowadays, we communicate using technology resources like the Internet. The quality of a person's life has unquestionably improved because of technology. The ability to read, analyze, evaluate, and communicate in various media types is referred to as media literacy. Information literacy, on the other hand, is the capacity to identify when information is required and to access, assess, utilize, and effectively communicate information in its different forms. People who are media and information literate can analyze and make educated decisions. It emphasizes freedom of expression because these freedoms allow individuals to evaluate the goals of the media and other information sources, examine their content, and make informed criticisms as both consumers and producers of information and media content.

Knowledge of media and information will give an advantage in the current world, particularly when it comes to sharing and obtaining information and knowing the majority of false and accurate information in various media. It is beneficial as a media and information-literate individual because one will become exposed to analyzing and evaluating different kinds of information. As a student, it requires critical thinking skills when validating various types of information from several sources or media. One important thing that I learned by being a critical thinker is to criticize information first before believing in it. For example, when the news pops up in my notifications, such as "There are no classes today," I first check if the author is a credible source, then I will do more research to validate if it is accurate information. Media and Information Literacy (MIL) essentially allows us the freedom to express ourselves and share knowledge, which is also critical in our democratic society to provide equal rights to all citizens and to foster peace across all cultures. Moreover, a media- and information-literate individual is responsible and respectful. For instance, cyberbullying and disseminating false information were the major issues we encountered in the media. Because of the freedom in the media, some people have forgotten the proper etiquette that we must maintain as responsible users. It means that the audience has value as well. Being a media and information literate individual has enormous value if one becomes a resource and a translator of current information into media possesses a keen understanding of the information in the media and can work with others using or sharing information. Again, as students, it will also aid us in our learning process and provide us with more information to use in our future activities, particularly in our future careers. We can be inspired to become future entrepreneurs who aid our country's technological and economic development.

To become media literate, we must master asking the right questions about what we are watching, reading, or listening to. To be information literate, we must recognize when information is required and be able to access, analyze, and apply that knowledge effectively. Let us now be educated and respectful in whatever we do, not just online, but also in real life. Let us be responsible enough to call ourselves media and information-literate individuals.
